A beautiful and rare ‘Triennale’ sideboard, Model OS29, designed by Arne Vodder in 1957 and produced in Denmark by Sibast Møbler.

The Triennale name comes from one of the most important moments in Vodder’s career. In 1957 the OS29A sideboard, produced by P.O. Sibast, was awarded first prize at the Triennale di Milano. The design became known as the ‘Triennale’ sideboard and was subsequently produced in a number of different variations.

This example is finished in beautifully figured rosewood veneer with solid rosewood legs. For us, it is the simplicity of the piece that makes it so successful. 

The wonderful bank of drawers has gently curved fronts, with the curve itself forming the handle. There is no need for additional hardware and the repeated curved shape gives what is otherwise a very simple cabinet a strong decorative detail. The slender legs give what is quite a substantial cabinet a surprisingly light and elegant appearance.

At 183 cm wide, the sideboard is a very useful size. It has plenty of presence without being overly large and works equally well as a practical piece of storage or simply as a beautiful piece of furniture.

The condition is excellent for its age and the sideboard has clearly been carefully looked after throughout its life. We have carefully cleaned and waxed the piece, bringing out the richness and figuring of the rosewood while retaining its original character. There are minor signs of age and use, as you would expect from a piece dating from the 1950s, but nothing excessive or that detracts from the overall appearance.

A rare and very handsome example of Arne Vodder’s work and, for us, a particularly good example of Danish furniture from the late 1950s.
