An exceptionally rare Pierre Jeanneret Metal Cafeteria Table, dating from 1959–60 and originally designed for use at Punjab University, Chandigarh. This particular example has a zinc top over a teak frame and is a model we have very rarely encountered.

The table is particularly interesting for its combination of materials and straightforward construction. The zinc top is supported by four outward-facing, diagonally set tapered teak legs, giving the otherwise simple form a strong architectural quality. The arrangement of the legs creates a pleasing sense of movement and gives the table a surprisingly light appearance despite its substantial size.

The zinc surface has aged beautifully, developing a deep and even patina through use. There are signs of early repairs and natural variations across the surface, all of which contribute to the character of the table and provide a visible record of its working life. We particularly like the contrast between the cool, industrial quality of the zinc and the warmth of the teak frame.

Designed as cafeteria furniture for Punjab University, the table was intended for everyday institutional use rather than as a decorative object. This is part of what we find so appealing about Jeanneret's Chandigarh furniture. The designs are practical and robust, yet often contain subtle architectural details that give them a much stronger presence than their original purpose might suggest.

At 184 cm in length and 92 cm deep, the table has generous proportions and works particularly well as a dining or communal table. Its relatively simple form also allows the materials and patina to remain the focus, making it equally comfortable in contemporary and period settings.

From our entire collection of past and present Pierre Jeanneret works, this is possibly the rarest and most significant piece we have handled. We have never seen this particular zinc-topped version of the cafeteria table offered for sale before, which makes its survival particularly interesting.

We personally love this table and have used it ourselves at the gallery for over fifteen years. It is a piece we have lived with and enjoyed for many years, which makes it particularly difficult for us to part with.

The table has been structurally restored and is presented in excellent vintage condition. The restoration has been undertaken sympathetically, preserving the deep, even patina of the zinc and the character of the original construction. Aside from the natural zinc jointing and early repairs, the table shows no excessive alterations.

The table is from Punjab University, Chandigarh, India, and forms part of the extensive body of furniture Jeanneret designed for the city's public and institutional buildings.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture.

We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the authenticity, provenance or restoration of our Jeanneret pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
