An exceptionally rare Model 240 table lamp designed by Tito Agnoli in 1956 and produced in Italy by O-Luce.

As collectors of Tito Agnoli's work, this is a lamp we have always admired and one we were extremely pleased to find. It is also one of those pieces we know we will miss once it has sold. The quality, balance and condition are exceptional, and we have been very tempted to keep it for our own personal collection.

The construction is beautifully simple. A slender brass upright rises from a compact cylindrical base, supporting a long tubular aluminium shade finished in deep red enamel. The shade is connected to the stem by an articulated brass fitting, allowing it to be moved through a considerable range of positions.

This adjustability is fundamental to the design. The cylindrical shade can be directed downwards as a desk or reading light, raised almost vertically, or positioned horizontally. The small weighted base and slender upright remain visually quiet, allowing the long shade to become the dominant element of the lamp.

There is an exceptional balance to the proportions. The shade is relatively long in relation to both the stem and base, yet the lamp never feels top-heavy. For us, it is this relationship between the three principal elements — base, stem and shade — that makes the design so successful.

Around the upper section of the shade is a narrow row of rectangular perforations. When the lamp is illuminated, light escapes through these openings to form a fine band around the cylinder, while the open end of the shade provides the principal directional light. It is a small detail, but one that completely changes the appearance of the lamp when switched on.

The materials are equally well judged. The deep red enamel has a rich, almost architectural quality, while the aged brass introduces a warmer surface and emphasises the articulated joint and slender stem.

What appeals to us about the Model 240 is that nothing feels unnecessary. The construction is economical, the movement is extremely well resolved and the proportions are beautifully judged. It is a small lamp, but one with a remarkably strong presence.

This example is also in exceptional condition. The original red enamel is extremely well preserved, with only very minor signs of age and use, while the brass retains a warm and naturally developed patina. We have carefully cleaned the lamp but deliberately retained these original surfaces.

Having handled and collected a number of Tito Agnoli designs over the years, this is one we rate very highly. The combination of rarity, condition and the sheer quality of the design makes it a difficult piece for us to part with. We have seriously considered keeping it for our personal collection and, once sold, it is a lamp we will genuinely miss.
