A rare and very attractive example of Arne Jacobsen’s Bellevue floor lamp, designed in 1929 and produced by Louis Poulsen. This particular example dates from the 1950s and has the rare perforated shade, a detail seldom seen on surviving examples.

The Bellevue was one of Jacobsen’s earliest lighting designs and already displays many of the characteristics that would become associated with his later work. The long curved brass gooseneck allows the light to be directed, while the simple circular base and distinctive painted metal shade give the lamp a beautifully balanced and elegant profile. A lovely detail is the four small brass feet beneath the base, lifting it slightly from the floor and giving what could otherwise be a relatively heavy element a lighter appearance.

The perforated shade is what particularly distinguishes this example. A series of small perforations around the upper section allows points of light to pass through when illuminated, creating a subtle decorative effect as well as providing ventilation. It is a small but beautifully considered detail and gives this version of the Bellevue a very different character from the more commonly seen solid shade.

The lamp is in good vintage condition and we have deliberately retained the signs of age and use that have developed over its life. The brass has a rich, naturally aged patina and there are small areas of paint loss to both the base and shade. The shade also has a number of dents and marks consistent with its age and use. For us, these are all part of the character of an original 1950s example and we have chosen not to over-restore the piece.

The adjustable gooseneck remains functional and holds the shade well once positioned. As can be expected with an original mechanism of this age, it can occasionally be a little temperamental when adjusting, but once set it holds the lamp securely in position.

A rare version of one of Arne Jacobsen’s earliest and most recognisable lighting designs, made particularly special by its unusual perforated shade and wonderfully aged original surfaces.
