A rare and very early reading stand designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced in 1936 by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden.

This example dates from the first year of production and retains its original manufacturer's label, dated 1936. The stand combines a rectangular birch reading tray with an exceptionally light nickel-plated steel frame, a combination of materials that Mathsson was exploring during this important early period of his work.

The construction is remarkably economical. Three slender tubular steel legs extend directly from the central upright to form the base, without the need for any additional structure or unnecessary fittings. The upright then continues upwards before bending through ninety degrees to support the wooden tray.

Both the height and angle of the reading surface can be adjusted. The central upright telescopes from approximately 75 to 103 cm and is secured by a simple metal fitting, while a separate mechanism beneath the tray allows its angle to be altered considerably. The photographs show how far the tray can move, from an almost horizontal position through to a steep reading angle.

For us, this adjustability is an important part of the design. It was conceived as a genuinely useful piece of furniture rather than simply a stand with a fixed reading position. The long projecting base gives stability while allowing the reading surface to be positioned close to a chair without a heavy pedestal underneath it.

The birch tray is equally straightforward, with a shallow raised edge to retain a book, papers or sheet music when the surface is tilted. Although designed as a reading stand, its adjustable height and angle also make it extremely practical for use as a music stand.

The reading stand belongs to the same important period in which Mathsson was developing some of his earliest reclining furniture. Contemporary and later documented examples show reading stands used alongside his lounge chairs, allowing the user to read comfortably while remaining in a reclined position.

What we like about this piece is how little there is to it. A wooden reading surface, a few lengths of tubular steel and two simple adjustment mechanisms are essentially all that is required. The result is extremely light visually, but also practical and remarkably adaptable.

The stand retains its original Firma Karl Mathsson manufacturer's label, identifying Bruno Mathsson and Värnamo, Sweden, and dating the piece to 1936.

The stand has been carefully cleaned and is presented in very good original condition. The birch retains the marks and small variations associated with its age and use, while the nickel-plated steel has developed an attractive naturally aged surface.
