A pair of Luna table lamps, originally conceived by Swiss designer Alfred Hablützel in 1957, with the distinctive metal support developed in collaboration with the Swiss sculptor Bernhard Luginbühl. The design is also sometimes referred to as La Ligne in the secondary market.

The design originated from Hablützel’s interest in reusing spherical opaline glass shades that were being discarded during the modernisation of interiors. Rather than suspending the glass globe conventionally from the ceiling, he repositioned it as a table light, resting the sphere within a simple metal support. Luginbühl, known for his work as a sculptor in iron, developed the supporting structure for the design.

The result is remarkably simple. A large spherical opaline glass shade is held within a polished chrome-plated steel frame, its horizontal band appearing to pass directly through the centre of the globe. Three slender vertical supports raise the sphere slightly above the surface, giving what is otherwise a substantial form an unexpected sense of lightness.

When illuminated, the opaline glass produces a soft, even light across the entire sphere, while a small amount of light is also cast downwards beneath the lamp. The polished chrome frame reflects the illuminated glass and provides a crisp contrast to the softness of the spherical shade.

This pair dates from the 1980s production of the design by Swisslamps International. The lamps are unmarked and are in excellent vintage condition, with only very minor signs of age and use.

The lamps work particularly well as a pair, either positioned together or used separately as bedside or side-table lighting.
