An original Easy Chair designed by Pierre Jeanneret circa 1958 for the ambitious modernist city of Chandigarh, India. Sourced directly from Chandigarh’s historic institutional complexes, this single lounge chair has been meticulously and sympathetically restored in the United Kingdom by a museum-grade furniture restorer, preserving its original character and construction. Crafted from solid Burmese teak, the chair balances the robust architectural geometry of Jeanneret’s Chandigarh furniture with the comfort and functionality of a well-considered lounge chair.

Characterised by its distinctive inverted-V leg structure, the frame is constructed using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. The angled leg braces provide structural rigidity while creating the strong geometric profile that has become synonymous with Jeanneret’s furniture for Chandigarh. The chair features a subtly inclined backrest and deep seat, designed in conjunction with the tensioned cane work to provide a comfortable and supportive sit.

Jeanneret played a central role in the development of Chandigarh, working closely with Le Corbusier and overseeing much of the city’s architectural and furniture programme. His furniture was designed to furnish the city’s extensive civic, institutional and residential buildings, resulting in a body of work that has become one of the most important expressions of Indian modernism of the mid-20th century.

The restoration has been carried out with an emphasis on preserving the chair’s historical integrity. The original teak framework has been structurally stabilised and carefully cleaned, while original character marks, minor historic surface indentations and the deep oxidation of the vintage teak have been retained, preserving the natural patina acquired through approximately seventy years of use.

The timber has been finished with a traditional hand-rubbed wax. The seat and backrest have been expertly re-caned by hand in the UK using traditional square-pattern cane, closely matching the original specification. All of the wooden components of the chair are original.

The chair is now in excellent restored condition. The frame is structurally sound, stable and ready for everyday residential use, while the newly fitted cane is clean, taut and evenly tensioned. The wear and patination retained across the teak are entirely consistent with age and historic institutional use in India, giving the chair an authenticity and character that cannot be replicated by contemporary reproductions.
