Designed by Boris Tabacoff in 1971 and produced by Mobilier Modulaire Moderne (MMM) in France, this rare pair of Sphere Lounge chairs is a distinctive example of French Space Age furniture.

The period from roughly the mid-1960s through to the mid-1970s produced some of the most distinctive examples of what is now known as Space Age design. New materials, manufacturing techniques and sculptural forms defined the period, and Tabacoff’s Sphere chairs are a particularly refined example of this approach.

The chairs are distinguished by their low, floating form. Each is formed from a gently curved smoked-brown acrylic shell, supported on a polished chrome-plated steel frame terminating in a circular base. The deeply upholstered seat follows the contours of the shell, creating a low and enveloping form. The cream mohair velvet upholstery provides a soft contrast to the translucent brown acrylic and polished chrome.

The Sphere chairs exemplify Tabacoff’s experimental use of acrylic in furniture design, combining industrial materials with a sophisticated sculptural approach to seating. The suspended shells and circular bases create a sense of lightness, while the generous proportions give the chairs a substantial and enveloping presence.

A rare and striking example of French 1970s design, the pair has a strong sculptural presence that can be appreciated from all angles. The combination of translucent acrylic, polished chrome and cream mohair gives the chairs a distinctive character suited to both contemporary and period interiors.

The chairs have been fully cleaned and carefully restored. The acrylic shells retain a few minor chips along the edges, which are present but not particularly noticeable. The foam has been replaced using the original foam as a guide, while the fabric has also been renewed using the original upholstery pattern. There is some pitting to the chrome on the bases, consistent with age and use. All of the points mentioned above have been photographed and are available to view in the accompanying images.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom. High-resolution photographs, detailed condition reports and video inspections are available upon request.
