A very handsome set of six Richard Young dining chairs, combining the polished chrome and strong geometric forms characteristic of British furniture design during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The chairs have a particularly elegant and distinctive profile, with unusually tall, slender backs flowing continuously into the seats. The gently curved form gives the chairs a strong sculptural quality, while remaining remarkably light in appearance despite their considerable height.

Each upholstered seat is supported on a single chromed-steel column terminating in a four-spoke base. The slender chrome structure provides a particularly good contrast with the softness of the upholstered seat and back and gives the chairs the clean, architectural character associated with Merrow Associates' furniture of the period.

The set has been professionally reupholstered in a geometric patterned fabric in soft shades of grey, cream and beige. We particularly like the relationship between the repeating geometric pattern and the very simple form of the chairs; the fabric gives the set considerable character without overwhelming the design.

The chromed bases remain in very good condition, with only minor signs of age and use. The chairs are structurally excellent and retain their small black floor protectors to the ends of the bases.

At 111 cm high, the exaggerated proportions of the backs are what particularly distinguish this design. Seen together as a set of six, they create a wonderful rhythm around a dining table and have a much stronger presence than a conventional dining chair, while the narrow profile keeps them visually light.
