A rare and very early Alvar Aalto low chest of drawers, dating from 1935 and produced in Finland by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, Turku.

The chest was imported into Britain by Finmar, the British importer and distributor of Aalto’s furniture during the 1930s, and retains its original Finmar label to the back. Dating from the first years of Aalto furniture production, it is a very good example of the simple and highly functional furniture being produced during this period.

Constructed from birch and birch-veneered plywood, the low chest is arranged over two rows. The upper row is divided into two smaller drawers, with a single full-width drawer below. The cabinet is raised on Aalto’s characteristic bent birch L-legs, which soften the otherwise simple rectangular form and give the low, compact cabinet a surprising lightness.

The pale birch is contrasted by the original black drawer pulls. As with the taller chest from the same collection, the black finish has worn naturally in the areas of greatest use, revealing the birch beneath. We especially like this detail; the wear has developed gradually through decades of use and gives the chest a character that could not be recreated.

We purchased the chest directly from the family of the original owner, together with the larger Alvar Aalto chest of drawers from the same collection. Both pieces had been lovingly looked after and professionally restored by the previous owner. The chest is therefore presented in excellent vintage condition while retaining the colour and patina that have developed with age.

As with all vintage furniture of this period, there are small dings, dents and signs of previous use, but none that stand out or detract from its overall appearance.
