An early Alvar Aalto Side Table, Model 88, designed in 1933 and produced in Finland by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, Turku.

The table was imported and distributed in Britain by Finmar and retains its original Finmar label, dating this example to between 1933 and 1938. It is a very good example of Aalto’s early experiments with laminated birch and the development of the bent-wood construction that would become such an important part of his furniture designs.

The table retains its original black-painted top, which provides a striking contrast with the pale birch legs below. The rectangular top is supported on Aalto’s characteristic bent birch L-legs, one of the defining features of his furniture from this period. There is very little decoration or unnecessary detail; much of the character of the piece comes from the contrast between the dark surface and pale birch, together with the softly curved profile of the L-legs.

The compact proportions make the Model 88 an especially practical design, allowing it to work equally well as a side table, occasional table or bedside table.

We have dealt in Alvar Aalto furniture for many years and have also collected his work ourselves. Early pre-war examples retaining their original Finmar labels are difficult to find and are pieces we are always pleased to come across.

The table is presented in excellent vintage condition and retains the patina that has developed naturally through its life. The original black-painted top has very small areas of paint loss, typical of a piece of this age, while the birch legs show minor marks and signs of previous use. For us, these details form part of the character of the table and are entirely appropriate for an early example retaining its original surface.
