A rare Arne Jacobsen side table, designed in 1962 for St Catherine’s College, Oxford, and produced in Denmark by Fritz Hansen.

St Catherine’s College is one of Jacobsen’s most important architectural commissions in Britain. He was responsible not only for the architecture of the college but also for its interiors and furnishings, creating a remarkably complete and unified environment. This table was designed specifically as part of that project and comes from St Catherine’s College itself.

The table has a beautifully restrained construction, with a rosewood-veneered frame supporting a clear glass top. The simplicity of the design places emphasis on the proportions and materials. Its compact scale makes it particularly versatile as a side or occasional table.

Produced by Fritz Hansen, the table is a fine example of Jacobsen’s approach to furniture within an architectural setting, where individual pieces were conceived as part of the wider interior rather than in isolation.

The table has been well preserved, retaining a good original appearance with minor signs of age and use. Its documented connection to St Catherine’s College makes it a particularly interesting example of Jacobsen’s work and an increasingly difficult model to find with its original institutional provenance.
