An exceptionally rare pair of 'Unit' armchairs, designed by pioneering British modernist designer Robin Cruikshank in 1965. We use the word rare carefully. Despite extensive research, we have been unable to find another example of the Unit armchair offered for sale, either historically or currently. The only examples we have been able to locate are illustrations in the original catalogue and a period book celebrating British design of the 1960s.

The design represents Cruikshank’s distinctive mid-1960s solo work, shortly before his involvement with the furniture produced for Apple Corps and his later formation of ROR International with Ringo Starr. This period represents an important chapter in Cruikshank’s career, as he developed a highly individual approach to modern furniture that combined industrial materials with sophisticated detailing and a distinctly architectural sensibility.

The Unit armchairs embody this approach, combining substantial satin-brushed steel frames with polished edges, rosewood-veneered arms and cognac leather upholstery. The result is a sophisticated expression of British mid-century modernism, balancing industrial construction with warmth and refinement.

The Unit armchair is characterised by its low-slung, architectural silhouette. Rather than concealing the structure within a traditional timber frame, Cruikshank made the construction an integral part of the design, using a bold exposed perimeter of brushed steel to frame the floating upholstered seat and back cushions. The precision of the design is particularly evident when the chairs are placed together, their geometric frames fitting seamlessly alongside one another.

The heavy-gauge steel frames remain structurally excellent, completely true and free from structural damage. The steel retains natural, age-appropriate surface wear, minor scuffs and areas of historical patina consistent with genuine use over approximately sixty years. The original cognac leather upholstery has been carefully preserved, retaining its varied patina, natural creasing and beautifully developed character. There are no tears or structural compromises to the leather.

The restoration was undertaken with the intention of preserving as much original material as possible. Our trusted upholsterer carefully removed the original leather and buttons, updated the underlying straps and foam to premium modern standards, and then meticulously reinstalled the original upholstery. The result is deliberately understated. There are no obvious signs of restoration, and the original leather retains exactly the character and patina that make these chairs so compelling. For us, this is the mark of a successful restoration: the work has been carried out to the highest standard while remaining almost entirely invisible.

A genuinely rare example of British mid-century design, this pair offers an unusual opportunity to acquire a little-known Cruikshank design that has remained remarkably elusive on the market. The combination of its sculptural steel construction, rosewood detailing, original leather and exceptional condition makes the pair particularly appealing to collectors of modernist design.
