A rare post-war set of Marcel Breuer Nesting Tables, designed for Isokon in 1936 and produced by the Isokon Furniture Company in the UK circa 1961. The design is one of Breuer’s most recognisable pieces from his period working with Isokon and an exceptionally simple example of his approach to moulded plywood furniture.

The three tables are formed from moulded beech plywood, each made from a single continuous sheet that curves across the top and down to form the legs. The tables graduate in height and depth, allowing all three to nest neatly together. It is an extraordinarily economical construction, with almost nothing added that is not structurally necessary.

This is a post-war British-produced set dating from circa 1961. The tables retain their original off-white painted finish, which has mellowed considerably with age to the warm cream colour seen today. We have been fortunate to handle several vintage sets of these tables over the years, and the old painted examples tend to age in a very similar way, with the colour gradually softening and mellowing over time.

There is a light build-up of patina to the painted surfaces which we have deliberately retained. In places, particularly across the table tops, the grain of the veneer can be seen through the aged painted finish. There are minor marks, dings, dents and small areas of wear, all things we would expect to see on a vintage set of tables of this age.

We have gently cleaned the three tables but have deliberately avoided over-cleaning or attempting to remove the surface patina. All three remain structurally sound and we can see no evidence of structural restoration. The set is presented in excellent vintage condition, retaining the age and character that we particularly like to see in original examples.

These post-war tables were originally sold without labels, and consequently this set is unlabelled. Having handled several examples over the years, we are very familiar with their construction, materials and the characteristic way in which the original painted surfaces age.

The three tables work beautifully nested together, where the graduated forms become particularly sculptural, but are equally practical separated around a room as individual side tables.

We currently also have an original pre-war set of Breuer’s Nesting Tables available, providing an interesting opportunity to see the differences between the early Estonian production and this later British-made version.
