A beautifully made stoneware bowl by Paul Philp, dating from the 2010s, with a distinctive green surface and softly irregular hand-formed shape.

We particularly like Philp's ceramics for the way they sit between functional pottery and sculpture. His forms are often simple and restrained, allowing the character of the clay and the surface treatment to become the focus. This bowl is a good example of that approach, with its broad, low form and subtle variations in the surface giving it a strong sense of individuality.

Made from stoneware with mixtures of clay, the bowl has been shaped and finished by hand, with the variations in colour, texture and form that come with this process. The green surface changes gently across the piece, highlighting the irregularities of the clay and giving it a particularly tactile quality.

The bowl is equally successful used as intended or displayed as a sculptural object. Its relatively simple form allows the material and surface to do the work, while its scale makes it easy to place on a table, shelf or other surface within an interior.

The artist's seal is present to the base.

We have a number of Paul Philp's works and have always particularly liked the individuality of his ceramics. Each piece has its own character as a result of the handmade process, and we think they work especially well when displayed individually or alongside other ceramics and works of art.
