This is a matched set of six original modular bookcase units, designed in 1933 by the influential Danish architect Mogens Koch and produced by the esteemed cabinetmaker Rud Rasmussen. A landmark in the history of Danish modernism, this design remains one of the most intelligent and flexible furniture systems ever conceived.
Koch’s philosophy was rooted in functionality and adaptability. The genius of this modular shelving lies in its deceptively simple, square form, allowing the units to be freely stacked, aligned, or oriented horizontally or vertically in countless configurations. Designed to evolve with the user’s needs, this system embodies the modernist ideal of form following function — making it a truly timeless design.
These particular examples are crafted from Oregon pine, a material cherished by Danish designers for its warm, golden tone and distinctive, expressive grain. The joinery and construction — overseen by Rud Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most respected makers — reflect exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. Each unit feels both architectural and tactile, blurring the line between furniture and sculpture.
The set is presented in good vintage condition. There are surface marks, scratches, dings and dents as expected for their age, mostly on the tops where the units have previously been stacked together. Original Rud Rasmussen labels remain affixed to the back of each module, confirming provenance and authenticity.
