Designed by Børge Mogensen for Fredericia in 1958, the Spanish Chair is one of Mogensen’s best-known designs, combining a substantial solid oak frame with broad expanses of saddle leather.

We currently have a set of four vintage examples available, all acquired from the same collection and photographed together on this page. Finding four vintage Spanish Chairs together, with such closely matched colour and patina, is increasingly unusual and was one of the things that particularly attracted us to this group.

The design was inspired by traditional Spanish furniture, which Mogensen encountered while travelling through Spain. He simplified these references considerably, reducing the chair to a strong oak framework supporting broad sections of saddle leather. The wide armrests are an integral part of the structure and give the chair much of its distinctive character.

Both the oak and leather have developed a wonderful depth of colour and patina through age and use. The thick saddle leather has softened and shows natural variations in colour, marking and surface, while the oak frames have matured to a warm, rich tone. Having come from the same collection, all four chairs have aged together and remain remarkably consistent in colour and character.

We have carefully cleaned and waxed all of the wooden elements, retaining the marks and wear that have developed over the years. The leather was removed from the frames and treated several times with leather cream to nourish and preserve it before being refitted. Nothing has been done to disguise the age of the chairs; the intention has simply been to preserve and present them as they should be. The set is now presented in excellent vintage condition.

Although substantial chairs, the construction is remarkably straightforward and honest. The leather is held under tension across the oak frames and can be adjusted using the characteristic brass buckles. There is very little unnecessary decoration; the quality comes from the proportions, materials and construction.

We believe these examples date from approximately the 1970s or 1980s. They are vintage Fredericia production rather than contemporary examples, although we have not been able to establish a precise production date.

We would very much like to keep the four chairs together. Vintage Spanish Chairs can be found individually and as pairs, but a set of four from the same collection, with such closely matched colour and patina, is considerably more unusual. For this reason, our preference is to sell them as a complete set of four, although we would consider splitting the set into two pairs.
