A pair of Tudric pewter vases, Model 029, designed by Oliver Baker for Liberty & Co., dating from circa 1903.
The vases have an elegant, elongated form, with a narrow tapering body rising from a circular foot to a gently flared upper section. Two long, sinuous handles extend from either side of the body, curving outwards before crossing towards the base. The handles give the vases much of their distinctive Art Nouveau character and change their appearance considerably when viewed from different angles.
Around the upper section is a continuous band of stylised decoration, worked in low relief. This sits in contrast to the long, relatively plain body below and gives greater emphasis to the top of the vase.
For us, one of the most successful aspects of the design is the relationship between the central body and the handles. From the front, the handles form two large open loops around the vase; as the piece is turned, they cross and overlap, creating a much more complex silhouette. Despite their relatively small scale, the vases have a strong sculptural quality.
The Model 029 forms part of Liberty & Co.'s Tudric range of pewterware, which brought together a number of designers working within the British Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. Oliver Baker contributed a number of designs to Liberty's metalwork ranges during this period.
Both examples retain their original stamped Tudric markings and Model 029 number to the underside.
The pewter has been carefully cleaned while retaining the natural variations, marks and surface associated with its age. Both vases are presented in good antique condition.
